How can I prepare for retirement?
The number one thing you can do is see a Financial Planner! The evidence is quite clear, according to Netwealth, only 45% of ‘unadvised’ customers say they are ‘prepared for retirement’. Compare this to ‘advised’ customers whereby 76% feel they are prepared for retirement.
As a Financial Planner on the Sunshine Coast for almost 2 decades, I see all sorts of financial situations – and I can tell quite quickly the best strategies in order for people to achieve their goals. This week I saw a couple in their late 50’s. The husband, who was commuting back and forth to Brisbane each day was not enjoying his job – and was certainly not enjoying the daily commute from their home in Buderim. He said, that, financially, he could only really expect to retire in a few years time. They had a rental property in Brisbane which was unencumbered. By retiring in the current financial year – as the next financial year was only a few months away, it meant that, despite a significant capital gain on their investment property, we could erase much of the capital gains utilising catch up concessional superannuation contributions and, with the intention of selling the investment property in the following year, having the capital gain falling in the year where the husband was not working. We could utilise some of the left over cash to provide the husband’s income requirements until such a time as he could access his tax-free pension payments. This resulted in a much happier family life for these customers, knowing that they could indeed retire when they wanted to, having security in the knowledge that they could finish their work and achieve their income goals during their retirement.
